Buying a motorcycle in Vietnam: the blue card and the paperwork

Buying a motorcycle in Vietnam looks easier than it does in most countries. The seller hands you the documents and the keys, you shake hands, and the deal is done. That simplicity is exactly where the problem starts. Six months later, when you want to sell the bike or move it to another city, you find out which papers you never received.

The blue card is half the value

The main document for a motorcycle in Vietnam is the giấy đăng ký xe, usually called the blue card. It is a laminated card listing the frame number, the engine number, the licence plate and the name of the registered owner.

On the second-hand market the blue card is commonly valued at roughly half the price of the bike, and for good reason. Without it the motorcycle is very hard to resell, and you have nothing to show that the bike is not stolen.

Bikes with no blue card, or with a card in a stranger's name, do circulate and they are noticeably cheaper. That is not always a crime, but it is always a limitation: harder to sell, riskier to move between provinces.

Check this before any money moves

• Frame and engine numbers on the bike match the numbers on the blue card
• The name on the card matches the seller, or the seller holds the chain of sale contracts
• The plate on the bike matches the plate on the card
• There is a written sale contract with the seller's ID details
• The seller allows a mechanic to inspect the bike before payment

Sale contracts in Vietnam are often handwritten. That is normal practice, but keep the contract with the blue card: it is what explains how the bike reached you when the card carries someone else's name.

Where buyers usually go wrong

The most common mistake is to focus on the condition and the price and leave the paperwork for later. The second is buying remotely from photos without anyone checking the numbers in person. The third is accepting a promise that the card will arrive after payment.
