Getting a motorcycle delivered from another city in Vietnam

The bike you want is rarely in the city you live in. The largest selection sits in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, and you might be in Nha Trang. The question is always the same: ship it, or go and ride it back.

Riding it back yourself

Riding the bike home only looks cheaper. Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang is around 430 kilometres, a full day in the saddle on a highway with heavy truck traffic. Add fuel, a night on the road and the wear on a bike you just bought.

The real risk is different. You are getting on an unfamiliar machine you inspected an hour earlier and immediately covering hundreds of kilometres on it. Any hidden fault will surface on exactly that trip.

Using a transport company

Motorcycles move between Vietnamese cities on ordinary freight transport. The bike is accepted at the origin depot and released at the destination depot, and on popular routes the transit time is usually measured in days rather than weeks.

• The blue card or a copy should travel with the bike
• The sale contract shows who is sending and who is receiving
• The fuel tank is usually required to be nearly empty
• Remove or wrap mirrors and fragile plastics before handover
• Photograph the bike from every angle before it is loaded

Accepting the bike on arrival

Inspect the motorcycle before you sign for it, not after. Compare it against the photos you took before shipping. Confirm that the frame and engine numbers still match the blue card.
