Can a foreigner own a motorcycle in Vietnam
Registering in your own name, NN plates, buying through someone else, and what actually happens on the second-hand market.
Anyone can buy a motorcycle in Vietnam, including a tourist on a short stamp. Registering it in your own name is a separate story, and that is where the difference between buying and owning becomes important.
Registering in your own name
For the blue card to carry a foreigner's name you normally need a long-term visa or a residence permit plus documents confirming your legal stay and employment. With that in hand, a new motorcycle bought from an official dealer can be registered to you.
Foreigners in that situation are issued NN series plates. There is a trade-off: selling a bike with NN plates to a Vietnamese buyer is noticeably harder than selling an ordinary one, and that is worth thinking through before you buy rather than when you sell.
How the used market actually works
The overwhelming majority of used motorcycles are bought by foreigners without any re-registration. The blue card stays in the previous owner's name and the buyer receives it together with a written sale contract.
This is common practice, but it has a cost. On paper you are not the owner, and when you sell to the next buyer you will have to explain the chain of contracts.
- Keep the blue card and the sale contract together, and keep copies separately
- The contract should carry the seller's ID details and the frame and engine numbers
- Check that the name on the blue card matches the name on the previous contract
- Do not accept a deal without a blue card if you plan to keep the bike more than a couple of months
Which route to take
If you are staying long term and hold work documents, registering a new bike in your own name gives you the strongest position. If you are here for a season, either rent, or buy with a properly written contract and a document history you can follow.

What are NN plates in Vietnam?
They are the plate series issued to foreigners legally living and working in the country. Obtaining them is realistic with a full document set, but reselling such a bike to a Vietnamese buyer is harder.
Can I ride a motorcycle registered to someone else?
On the Vietnamese used market this is the normal situation. What matters is holding the blue card together with a written sale contract that shows how the bike came to you.
